The former St John's Ambulance Hall in Exmouth could be converted into flats, if plans are approved by East Devon District Council.

Document 24/0631/FUL wants 'to add a second floor to the existing first floor apartment to create two new flats.'

Each apartment will have two bedrooms, lounge, kitchen, and dining areas along with a bathroom. The first floor apartment that is already there, will stay the same.

The ground floor is currently being used as a garage, and a two bedroom apartment on the first floor. The apartment is accessed by an external stair to the rear of the existing building. The forecourt and the front of the building will not be changed.

The building will also have no parking spaces because of its close proximity to the town centre. The applicant says beacuse of 'good transport links, car parking spaces is not needed.'

Bastin Hall was up for sale in March 2023, a buyer was found and new wishes to extend the garage on the first floor to create a new two-bed apartment.

The design and access statement states that the houses and apartments around Elm Grove is 'not one consistent architectural form.' This means this building will be given a 'more modern contemporary appearance property' being built with 'modern materials and technologies to create a more sustainable home.'

The site is within the towns flood zone, so a separate application has been submitted to mitigate risks of flooding to the property.

The application has been submitted to EDDC and will be reviewed by officers at the next monthly meeting, before being approved or refused. You can comment or read the full application on the EDDC planning portal on their website.
