REAL life married couple Richard and Wendy Gomm will be treading the boards at the Salterton Playhouse as former Labour MP John Malcolm and his tense and attractive wife, Ann, who have ruined each other in the Salterton Drama Club's production of the Terence Rattigan classic Separate Tables from Monday, March 2, to Saturday, March 7, at 7.30pm.
Since joining SDC less than two years ago, Richard has directed two plays and acted in two and Wendy has appeared in two, but this will be the first play in which they have been cast together.
Last September, Richard directed Alphabetical Order in which Wendy played a marathon lead role as heroine Lucy, the easy going and good humoured librarian. In the other (contrasting) lead role as Sue Elliott, a shy, intelligent, assistant, Leslie, with an obsession for organisation. Whereas in Alphabetical Order Sue had to keep outwardly calm, in Separate Tables she shares some powerful and emotional drama as Sybil Railten-Bell with her formidable mother (Jenny Bowden) and misfit "Major" Pollock (David Wilkes).
Therese and other assorted guests are looked after by manageress Miss Cooper (Sandria Stewart) and waitress (Karen Bazeley). Among other guests are the eccentric Miss Meachem (Liz Waddams), the mousy Lady Matheson (Mary Logan) and retired schoolmaster Mr Fowler (David Holt).
Fay Hamilton is in the director's chair for Separate Tables and tickets, priced £7, are available from Budleigh Salterton Tourist Information Centre, Fore Street. Telephone: (01395) 445275.
