LOCAL artist Alan Cotton has been preparing for a 20th anniversary exhibition to show a selection of his landscape paintings. The exhibition will take place between September 17 and October 4 and will consist of around 60 landscape paintings displayed in David Messum's London gallery. Mr Messum has been a close friend of Mr Cotton for many years and they have worked alongside each other on previous trips and exhibitions.Mr Cotton, from Colaton Raleigh, has completed almost 50 of these exhibition pieces, painting the rugged landscapes of Hartland, North Devon, the west coast of Ireland and Provence during blossom time, something he describes as "one of the most stunning sights in the world." This exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of Mr Cotton's first exhibition at Messum's gallery in Cork Street, London, as well as his first trip to Provence in 1988 and he was inspired to go back to one of his favourite places in the world. The paintings will be sent to London in time for the show in September, before which Mr Cotton will have a small party for him and a group of friends to view his work.He said: "You miss some of the paintings. I always try to look over them before I send them away"Mr Cotton, who produced around 200 drawings when working on the exhibition, said: "I don't sell my drawings, I like to keep them, they're so personal to me and they have a lot of meaning"After the exhibition is over, Mr Cotton will start a commission on five paintings of Venice where he stayed last June. The paintings have been promised for Christmas and will be shown in Miami, after which Mr Cotton wants to take some time off to travel with his wife Pat, who is studying for a master's drama degree.
