The Salterton Players’ next offering will be a production of Agatha Christie’s famous whodunit A Murder is Announced.

The production will run at the Salterton Playhouse from Monday, March 5, to Friday, March 9, at 7.30pm. In addition, there will be a matinee on Saturday, March 10, taking place at 2.30pm.

“Director Marc Colson – who previously scored a hit for the club in 2016 with another Christie classic And Then There Were None – has successfully cast the piece, and regular patrons can look forward to seeing a number of new faces on the Budleigh stage as well as some old favourites,” said a club spokesperson.

“Rehearsals and set building are also well under way, and the club is anticipating a fine production when the show opens early in March.”

First produced at the Theatre Royal in Brighton, and subsequently at the Vaudeville Theatre in London in 1977, A Murder is Announced is set in the village of Chipping Cleghorn, where an unexpected announcement in the local paper states the exact time and place when a murder is to occur in the drawing room of Miss Blacklock’s house.

When the murder actually occurs, the victim is not one of the house’s several occupants, but an unexpected and unknown visitor.

“Described by critics as being ‘fiendishly ingenious’ and as ‘having the audience on the edge of their seats’, the play is a classic Christie puzzle of mixed motives, concealed identities and a second death,” says the club spokesperson.

“A determined police inspector follows the twists and turns of the plot, but the redoubtable Miss Marple is on hand to provide the final solution, at some risk to herself, in a dramatic confrontation, just before the final curtain.

“All in all, it should be a vintage evening of murder, mystery and suspense – so make a date in your diary and be sure not to miss it!”

Tickets for A Murder is Announced are £10 (£5 for under 16s), available now from Budleigh Tourist Information Centre (01395 445275).
