MADEIRA BOWLS: EXONIA won the final of the Les Thwaite Shield, contested by teams in the Symes, Robinson & Lee Evening League.

The Budleigh Hawks were unable to reproduce the form which earned them second place in the league table and lost to Exonia on both rinks.

Dave Helman, Peter Birch and Dick Mitchell went closest. Having started brightly, and holding a six-shot advantage, after five ends, they encountered a mid-match lean spell and, in spite of staging a late rally, lost to Bob Roberts' triple by 10 shots.

The presentation evening was a highly enjoyable affair, with each league team contributing a pair of bowlers to an eight-end roll-up which was won by the bowlers from the Budleigh sides.

Burges Stace, the retiring indoor captain, presented prizes on behalf of the sponsors.

Happily, the winners all chose to donate their cash prizes to charities.

The South West Multiple Sclerosis Centre benefited from the first prize awarded to league winners Exonia. The Budleigh Hawks chose the Exmouth and District Community Transport Group. Third-placed Falcons elected to donate to Budleigh and District Hospiscare.

The evening ended with participants being treated to a magnificent supper, prepared by Brenda Dixon and Maggie Dance, which was greatly appreciated by all present

Indoor activities are now concluded and members look forward to bowling outdoors again, commencing with the opening day this Saturday, followed by the Ladies' versus Men's Captains' match on Monday.

Presentations to the club's internal competitions winners will be made at lunch on May 3. Lunch will be preceded by a mixed drive at 10am.
