Exe 1st XI hosted Newent in their penultimate home game and both teams were hoping for a win in their campaigns to achieve success at either end of the league in West Premier One, writes Jojo Bannister.

The first half brought chances for both teams, but neither could put their chances away and the score remained 0-0 at half-time.

The second half saw Exe take the lead after ten minutes with Lorel Wallis scoring from a short corner follow-up. Newent responded with a fast break that culminated in a well-taken goal from a narrow angle which drew the game level with 30 minutes remaining.

After a sustained period of attacking play, Exe waited until the final two minutes of the game to score their winning goal, a second for Lorel Wallis, to end the game 2-1. A narrow victory, but a vital one for Exe as the season approaches its conclusion and promotion is still in sight.
