AT THE Budleigh Croquet Club’s Championship week there was a popular local win in the B level competition.
The event was contested by a well-matched group of a dozen players, all carrying a handicap of between 2 and 3.5.
Wendy Betteridge from New Zealand won her block with four wins and Brain Shorney, a local member, came second with three.
An injury problem left this block short of a competitor so Betteridge was actually undefeated in all her games.
The second block also had a drop-out and that left Croquet Club Chairman, Charles Townshend, coming out on top with three wins out of four.
Peter Miles, who had in fact beaten Charles +1 (on time) was runner-up, with two wins and a better points score than the other two players with the same tally of wins.
The semi-finals both went to time and saw Betteridge beating Miles +5, while Townshend defeated Shorney by the same score.
The final was played on Lawn 5, the fastest in the club, and both players had their problems.
Townshend had a well-controlled break under way, but came to grief after five hoops, while Betteridge went into the lead until a hit-in by Townshend in the closing minutes, enabled him to make three hoops and snatch victory by a single point.
