Topsham St James lost by eight wickets in their latest Francis Clark Devon League E Division game.

After two consecutive narrow defeats the Saints travelled to the picturesque setting of Bridestowe looking to return to winning ways.

They lost the toss and were invited to bat first in a soft, spongy wicket. The home opening attack put the ball on the spot with great consistency, making scoring very difficult.

After the loss of three early wickets Nick Crew and skipper Ross Treleaven put on 63 for the fourth wicket. Both fell in quick succession, each for splendid knocks of 35.

Thereafter it was left to Thomlinson, Penn and McShane to add important runs taking the total to 158 when the final wicket was lost.

What the Saints needed was an early break through and they got it with Alex Sparkes striking in the second over.

Sadly that was about as good as it got for the Saints as just one more wicket was taken with Bridestowe easing home with eight wickets to spare.

On Saturday the Saints are once more on the road when they travel to Kilmington.
