Topsham lift the Victory Cup.

BUDLEIGH invited teams from Topsham, Feniton, Exonia, Sidmouth, Phear Park, Madeira, Seaton and Ottery St. Mary to take part in their annual Victory Cup competition which is a round-robin event played over four ends, writes Paul Griffin.

In a competitive, but friendly, atmosphere the team from Topsham proved to be the strongest on the day with a winning score of plus 23.

The runners up were Sidmouth on plus 8 just edging out Budleigh on a count-back. During the competition the teams were provided with a superb cream team provided by the ladies.

In dry and sunny conditions Budleigh entertained the Kent touring side, Cobham, to a six rink friendly and won 122-100, winning four of the rinks in the process.

The best performing home rinks were Sid Cole, Gordon Smith, Rob Jerrard and skip Peter Woodland who won 29-13 and Ron Tyler's rink of John Vanstone, Bernard Brace and Stuart Butler who led all the way to win 19-11.

In a busy week, Budleigh travelled to Exonia to play a six rink mixed friendly and, despite sharing the rinks three all, were narrowly defeated.

Going into the last end Budleigh were leading by one shot overall but managed to drop ten shots to lose the match 106-97.

The top performing Budleigh rinks were Elizabeth Cole, Sam Higgins and skip Harry Vanstone with a 23-13 victory and Joan Shaw's triple of John Vanstone and George Woolacott who put in a strong finish to win 21-16.

In the Over 60's league the Budleigh C team made it three wins from their last four outings with a maximum eight points success, thanks to a 38-25 victory at the expense of Morchard Bishop B.

Stuart Butler's triple of Paul Griffin and Sid Cole led all the way to win their rink with a final score of 21-15.

Brian Evan's triple of Michael Bartlett and Bernard Brace, after trailing early on, came back strongly over the latter stages of their match, to win 17-10.

In a low scoring contest, the Budleigh B team just pipped Cullompton to win a margin of two shots, beating the Mid Devon outfit 28-26 with the four rinks played, being shared at 2-2.

Leading 15-14 on the fifteenth end Harry Vanstone's triple of Jeff Rigg and Brian Hubbard gained one shot on each of the remaining three ends to win their rink 18-14 and claim victory for Budleigh.
