THE EAST DEVON Golf Club is now the home of a splendid picture that has journeyed between the clubhouses at Sidmouth and East Devon. Each year East Devon golfers play an annual two-leg match with their close neighbours at Sidmouth. This rivalry dates back to 1932 when the Captain of East Devon received a challenge from "sixteen stalwart fellows" of Sidmouth Golf Club. The Captain replied by acknowledging the arrival of these 'rabbits', as he called them, and promising they would be 'slaughtered'! Two cartoons were drawn up by a Sidmouth member and these were later framed to produce "The Picture". One shows an eager team of Sidmouth rabbits led by the Sidmouth Secretary, F H Carroll, and the second is drawn at the same spot but this time the rabbits are lying forlornly on the ground, shot dead! "The Picture" match has continued to this day with the score standing at 45 to 23 in East Devon's favour with several matches halved. The result this year was a victory for East Devon by 28 matches to 20 to retrieve "The Picture" previously held by Sidmouth.Pictured are Sidmouth Captain Neil Faulkner and East Devon's Peter Gill with that famous picture.
