MADEIRA LADIES were delighted with another success in their latest Foxlands league match. In what proved to be an absorbing and challenging game against Honiton, Madeira were beaten on the two rinks in the away section of the match but won at home by a sufficient margin for a plus 6 shot victory. Liz Healy and her team of Janet Allen, Vee Bevan and Julie Gilbert achieved a substantial 30 shots to 11 win and this played a considerable part in ensuring the overall victory. Catherine King's team of Jan Roberts, Captain Pat Cain and Sandie Cox also did well very well in what turned out to be a tight match, finally prevailing by 18 shots to 14. Catherine King and Christine Macaulay also did well to win their County Pairs round against Julie Grant and her partner from Honiton. This was another very exciting contest, one that was not decided until the final end. King and Macaulay took a lead into that final end, but then found themselves staring down the barrel of defeat as they trailed by four. King though used her final wood to great effect as she sent down a precise delivery that killed the end and then, as time had run out, the Madeira pairing were declared winners. Madeira ladies played one friendly fixture this week against Exonia and were convincingly beaten by them. Played on three rinks, Exonia won on two and by 57 shots to 41 overall. Madeira's winning rink was skipped by Julie Gilbert who, with Janet Allen, Christine Macaulay and Jean Healey, won by 18 shots to 12.
