Withycombe Under-9s played their final home competitive match of a very successful first season when they entertained Torquay at Raleigh Park.
On a sticky surface more suited to the bulky forwards players the visitors had in their ranks rather than the possess rather than the quicker and leaner players on duty for Withy!
Torquay used their strength advantage barging their way through to a 20-10 victory in game one. Withies scorers were Harry Bennett and Alfie Gillard.
Game two saw another tough game which ended in a 10-10 draw. Charlie Passmore was at last given some space to use his devastating speed to score wide with James Griffin breaking through several tackles to touch down in the second half.
Withies lacked that killer edge shown in recent weeks and still seem to run sideways rather than forward.
The Man of the Match award went to Charlie Tyler for his all-round performance. The lack of bulk in the team has probably played a big part in some of the defeats this season with a lot of Withy tries coming from pace rather than crashing over the try line.
Maybe one or two bigger players are needed to succeed next season when scrums and mauls are used.
Next up it is the Exeter Saracens Festival this coming Sunday followed by the final matches of the season away against Teignmouth and Brixham in a three-way match the Sunday after.
It’s that time of year following the final home games to say a massive thank you to all the sponsors and supporters of the Withycombe Under-9s this season as well as the parents and especially the coaches, Dave Passmore, Ben Assleman and Tony Willis.
