Withycombe Under-9s scalp the Chiefs at Sandy Park

Withycombe Under-9s secured their first success of the season when they won one of their two meetings with hosts Exeter Chiefs with Jayden Marles scoring seven tries in the two games.
In the first game determined running by Marles opened the scoring for the Withies only 30 seconds into the contest!
This was followed by some excellent tackling by Ebony Mardle and Baxter Williams, forcing the Chiefs into touch when they looked certain to level the score.
The resulting hand over of play saw an almost carbon-copy replay of the first try, with Marles again going the length of the pitch to score.
Withycombe looked far more settled than in previous weeks and confidence was showing as they secured a 4-1 lead at half-time.
The Withy dominance continued after the break with Ebony Mardle dotting down in the corner after a click move.
Exeter’s playmakers showed good footwork and pace to score four tries between them, but they were not strong enough as a team to prevent Mardle, Jack Greaves and Curtis Frazer each score one other try.
In only her fifth game ever Cerys Haynes scored her first try before young Marles finished what he started by scoring a fine individual try to secure the side a 10-5 success.
The second game was not as successful for the Green and Blacks with Chiefs playing their stronger team, highlighting the benefits of having a bigger squad of players. However, all who were there could not question the resolve and commitment of the Withies players. Constant pressure from a rushing Chiefs defense and a couple of misplaced passes saw the home side race to a three try lead before Jaydan Marles continued his rich vein of scoring form before the break. He supported a fine barging run through the centre of the Exeter tacklers by Ebony Mardle who managed to off load the ball to twinkle-toes Marles. Exeter scored quickly after half-time, but Withy staged a comeback with two quick tries from Marles and relative newcomer Harry Hart. However, it wasn’t to be as Chiefs responded well with three more tries to close out a 7-3 triumph.
This Sunday Withy are at home to Brixham (11am) and all comers will be made most welcome.
Withy squad: Baxter Williams, Cerys Haynes, Charlotte Moules, Curtis Frazer, Ebony Mardle, Freddy Barnard, Harry Hart, Jack Greaves, Jaydan Marles, Tom Pidgeon and Tom Waiton.
