Withycombe Under-9s made the trip to Exeter Saracens for a tournament and were cruelly eliminated in the quarter final on tries count back.

They played in a pool group with Kingsbridge and Tiverton which resulted in one win and a draw. Against Kingsbridge they played very well and deservedly bagged a 30-20 victory.

Playing on a pitch much longer and wider than usual suited the pace they have in abundance and a Charlie Passmore hat trick, two from Erin Assleman and one from Harry Bennett, got them home.

Game two saw Withies play Tiverton for the first time and this resulted in a 15-15 draw. The ferocious tackling which was so prominent in the previous game seem to elude Withies who let in three rather soft tries.

Joe Cole, who had a fine tournament, dotted down twice and Harry Bennett scored the other.

With Kingsbridge defeating Tiverton, this meant Withies finished top of their group and had to play another group winner, Ivybridge.

The two sides served up an enthralling encounter which finished 20-20 after normal time. Two minutes of extra time followed with Withies battering the Ivybridge line constantly, but the Bridgers defence was resolute. Charlie Passmore was just bundled into touch and that was followed by a mazy run from Sam Skinner who was denied a last gap winner as he too was forced out.

That signalled the end of Withies brave attempt as Ivybridge had scored one more try in previous matches, thus putting them into the semi finals!

Charlie Passmore and Harry Bennett were the Withy scorers, but the Man of the Tournament award went to Joe Cole, not just for his two tries, but his fearless tackling, constantly knocking the opposition off their feet. What a find for he is for Withycombe!

A fantastic effort from every single player who played with pride. To remain undefeated was a magnificent achievement.
