Withycombe Under-12s well beaten at Cullompton

Withycombe Under-12s were beaten 33-7 when they came up against a well-drilled and noticeably more sizable opposition in hosts Cullompton.

The match was contested on a larger than usual pitch that encouraged wide play.

The Mid Devon side dominated from the kick-off with strong rucking and counter rucking that enabled them to retain possession.

This allowed them to ship the ball well through the backs. The Withy boys were slow to react to this and found themselves three converted tries down at the break despite some good periods of defence.

A stern taking to at half-time fired the boys up and they took to the second half with renewed aggression and determination. Cully continued to pressure, but ferocious Withy defence saw the boys gain more possession to stretch and attack the opposition with their own encouraging wide play. A much closer second half saw Withy concede a further two tries, but then score a very well worked consolation try in the corner.

This was certainly one of those classic ‘game of two different halves’ for Withy who really do need to begin games in similar way to their finish! If they could do that then score lines would certainly be far less flattering to the opposition. However, on this occasion, Cullompton were without doubt the better of the two teams on the day.

The two try scorers for Withy were Ben Wilkinson and Will Cooper whilst the Withy Man of the Match award was shared by Will Cornish and Will Jones who both served up shifts of strong running with ball in hand and aggressive tackling.
