Withycombe Under-12s shook off a trio of narrow recent defeats to defeat visiting Torquay 28-12 with a solid all-round show at Raleigh Park.

Withy attacked from the start with forceful rucking to secure the ball which was unselfishly distributed through the backs to allow Scoot Acheson to go over the try line - all within the first minute!

The game became a midfield battle and Withy did well to contain the sizeable Torquay forwards, who managed to dominate most of the set pieces. As has been shown in recent weeks, Withy’s strength is demonstrated when they can recycle their own ball through their pacey backs.

With the ball doing the work across the width of the pitch Acheson crossed again to leave Withy 14-0 up at the break.

Torquay pressure continued into the second half and they were eventually rewarded with a deserved try.

Withy responded well to this with a third well-worked with Acheson crossing for his hat-trick.

Will Cornish produced a terrific effort to burst through and slam the ball down for the fourth Withy try – each one being converted by Will Copper - before a Torquay counter saw them notch their second try late on.

The Withy Man of the Match award went to Tom Humphry in the back row for his all-round attacking play upfront.
