Withycombe Under-12 marked the occasion of wearing their new kit sponsored by Leese’s Skip Hire of Exmouth, with a superb all-round performance to defeat Brixham 35-5.
On a sticky pitch it was always going to be a dogged affair but Withy maintained a workman-like approach from the off.
The rucking and tackling was good and early Brixham possession was absorbed allowing the Withy boys to exert their own continued pressure which saw them produce some slick inter-passing.
Liam Randall was the first to make a break, but was unlucky to slip and knock on, on the try line.
Matt Rye opened the scoring with a trade mark try before full back Tom Humphry powered his way from deep to double the try tally. A third try, again scored by Rye sent Withy into the break with a 15-0 lead.
After the break there was more of the same with solid all-round play that served up encouraging passages of play with the ball being shipped out wide to continually pressure the visitors.
Will Jones showed a clean set of heels to score the first of the second half tries before Brixham bravely fought back to bag their only success of the game. Next to score for Withy was Will Cooper with a swift break from deep and then Scott Acheson showed awesome strength to hang on to the ball, shrugging off Brixham tacklers, before crossing for the sixth Withy try.
The seventh and final try came from a turn over at a visiting attack that led to Cooper seeing space and completing a chip-and-chase sequence to complete the scoring.
The Withy Man of the Match award went to Tom Humphry for his attacking performance with no quarter given when he temporarily swapped sides to help out Brixham in the first half!
