Withycombe Under-12s went down 21-14 in a close encounter at Exeter Saracens.
Withy opened brightly and took the game to the hosts who responded in equal measure.
Midway through the half Withy began to exert pressure by strong rucking and quick ball. This was rewarded by an extremely well-worked team try with first and second phase play that saw the ball get shipped out wide through slick hands to put in Ben Wilkinson away on the left wing. This was arguably the best worked try of the season so far with everyone contributing.
Withy continued to dominate in a similar fashion and ought to have secured at least another further try. Then fact they didn’t was down to a combination of handling errors, poor decision making and determined home defence.
Saracens responded towards the end of the half and, despite good Withy defence, the scores were levelled leaving honours even at half-time.
Saracens began the second half in the ascendancy, camping in the Withy half, but the pressure was absorbed well by Withy until finally it told and the Exeter side edged ahead.
This galvanised Withy who came back strongly with probing attacking play and a penalty move close to the home try line saw successive phases secured through strong rucking with Will Cooper picking up and spinning through the opposition to land the equalizer with Will Cornish making doubly sure in the dead ball area.
The game continued as a very even contest, but it was Saracens who claimed a narrow victory with a try from the final play of the match.
The Withy Man of the Match award went to Sam Diprose for good running with ball in hand, offloading and presenting at the tackle.
