Withycombe Under-11s entertained Totnes and Devonport at Raleigh Park last Sunday.
The visitors found Withy to be at the top of the game with the home side winning both their matches!
First up against Totnes Withy were 35-5 victors. The Withy youngsters were quickly out of the blocks with Charlie Passmore showing his amazing turn of speed, chasing the ball from the kick-off to score the first try with barely seconds on the board!
Harry Bennett added a second shortly afterwards before a useful Totnes replied just before half-time to leave Withy holding a 10-5 interval advantage.
The second half saw Withy attack with real purpose, constantly putting Totnes onto the back foot, and it wasn`t long before Bennett and Passmore both scored again following superb forward play. Ollie Willis was at the forefront of everything, constantly ripping the ball off the opposition and setting the platform for the Withy backs to do the rest. Fittingly it was Paddy McGuiness, who had a fuine game throughout who scored the final Withy try.
There was an impeccably observed minutes silence to remember the sacrifices made by people over the years in conflict before Withy took on Devonport Serivses, meeting them for the first time ever!
The home side took up where they had left off in the Totnes game with some hard, fast running and powerful play all-round.
Young Bennett powered over twice to give Withy an early 10-0 lead and, when McGuiness served up a superb off-load, it released the fleet-footed Passmore to race clear for a third try.
Provider then turned scorer as McGuiness threw an outrageous dummy before sprinting clear to make it 20-0. Devonport looked a good side and rallied scoring three tries from clever tactical kicking that got their wingers into a fast gear.
Withy were grateful for an Erin Assleman try to put the game to bed in the last minute ands seal a 25-15 success.
The morning’s action was concluded with Devonport Services defeating Totnes 30-10.
A big thank you, to both teams for making the long trip to Withycombe and playing their part in three very good games. Man of the Match was awarded to Ollie Willis for his all round contribution around the park. This round of matches saw a much improved performance from every Withy player on duty - finally showing that practice does make perfect.
