Withycombe Under-11s beaten at Newton Abbot

Withycombe under-11s were narrowly beaten in both their matches at Newton Abbot.
Both matches were excellent, if not bruising, encounters against a well drilled Newton outfit. Due to the main pitch being deemed unplayable, the match was switched to a much smaller area.
With players missing through illness, and a few still feeling under the weather, the young Withies played with real commitment and were unlucky to lose both games 10-5 and 10-0.
The conditions and the pitch size meant this was never going to be a game for both sets of pacey backs to show their worth, and so a forward dominated display was put on show.
Alfie Gillard was once again outstanding, rightly earning the man of the match award in game one. The tackling from every boy on show today was evident for all to see, with Callum Tose and Erin Assleman picking up injuries putting in big tackles, and we wish them a speedy recovery. Charlie Passmore was the lone Withy scorer in game one after good phases of play from Ollie Willis and Jack Wood. Ollie Hempstead was showing his worth yet again as a scrum half, constantly feeding his backs decent ball, and Joe farmer had a good game at fly half.
Game two saw a few changes from Withies and yet again another hard match ensued with the fresher boys wasting no time getting stuck in. The sticky conditions under foot suited the home team slightly better, and probably just deserved their wins. Ollie Willis was again awarded Man of the Match in game two. His excellent forward play enabled him to break the game line time and time again. Even though Withies lost, they certainly didn’t come away empty handed as this was a superb effort from the boys against a good side.
