Withycombe 20, Exmouth 5
Withycombe Under-10s entertained Exmouth in what proved to be a very exciting encounter.
The opening game was a typically competitive local derby. Withy began brightly and scored the first try. The Cockles produced an excellent response and camped themselves in the home half only to be really well resisted by the Withy defence. A well-drilled home side bagged a further brace of tries to hold a 15-0 half time advantage.
After the break the play became even more intense with little to separate two well matched outfits. Exmouth scored first after turning over Withy ball to make it, but the home side had the final say with a fourth try following a period of prolonged attacking pressure into the visitors half.
This was a great advert for Under-10 rugby in the town. A healthy crowd was treated to a game of high standard rugby. Both teams performed with determination, with Withy working exceptionally as a team to secure ball and use effective possession against sizeable opposition who always remained threatening.
Matthew Rye (2), Ben Wilkinson and Thomas Humphry scored the Withy tries whilst the Man of the Match award for the home side went to a deserving Matthew Rye for an outstanding all-round aggressive performance.
