Withycombe Under-10s took a squad of 14 players to compete in the Devon Festival at Devonport Services RFC on Sunday, April 21.

Mini-games of seven minutes were the format for the competition.

First up Withy beat Brixham 25-0 with tries from Ben Wilkinson (2), Matt Rye, Matthew Edworthy and Will Cooper.

Next up they beat Topsham 20-10 with a brace of tries from Wilkinson and Tom Humphrey.

Barnstaple were then beaten 10-5 thanks to a try double from Cooper and the final pool game saw Withy complete a full-house of victories with a 10-5 success over Plymstock Albion Oaks with tries from Eddie Warlow and Humphrey.

In the quarter final they were 10-0 winners over Pontypool, but the teams wonderful run of success ended at the semi-final stage when, after a 0-0 draw with Exeter Saracens, they exited the competition on the toss of a coin!

A Withy coach said: “The group was won in some style with four very accomplished victories, particularly against tough opposition from Barnstaple and Plymstock where they upped their game to play with an ever increasing intensity. The game against the sizeable touring side from Pontypool in the quarter finals saw the lads step a further gear to dominate throughout. Withy pressure putting the Welsh team on their back foot, giving them little room to attack from. Some fantastic aggressive rucking, ball retention and two man tackles were the hallmark of the collective Withy performance. Secured ball was then more often than not successfully shipped out wide to send in the runners to score. The Semi Final against old adversaries from Exeter Saracens saw a ferocious encounter with Withy dominating the game with outstanding rucking and tackling to snuff out any Sarries progression. Withy were on balance the better the team, but winning the toss to start the match meant a loss in the case of a draw. A tough way to go out of a very successful day which would have seen the boys play in a Final against Exeter Chiefs! This was probably the best rugby this group of players has served up all season and they can feel rightly proud of their efforts, they were all a real credit to Withycombe RFC.

The Withy Players of the Tournament award went to Sam Diprose and Josh Hammill.

This weekend sees the young Withy side on tour with a trip to St Agnes in Cornwall.
