Withycombe keep the pressure on leaders Saltash with a comfortable victory

Withycombe bounced back from losing their 100 per cent record with an assured performance in difficult conditions to defeat Hayle 39-3 at Raleigh Park.
The clubhouse end was particularly hard to manoeuvre in such were the underfoot conditions and, after four penalties in the Hayle 22 gave Withy a one-man advantage and skipper John Parkin opted to take the three points at the fourth time of asking.
A switch in tactic to attack from deep paid off with a blindside break ending with Jimmy Holman marking his return from injury with the first try of the afternoon.
Handling errors, hardly surprising given the conditions, were in abundance during the first half, though there was a major high point for another good home turn out when a Mike Richards off-load to Eugene Badenhorst saw the South African, later crowned Man of the Match, crossing for the first of his hat-trick of tries.
Withy led 17-3 at the break and it proved just as difficult in the second half with the Withy cause not helped by a yellow card to Dave Richards.
However, once the home side were restored to a full complement they powered on and the try count began to rise.
Badenhorst scored his second just after the hour mark and soon after forward Sam Conway applied the finish to some slick team play before Badenhorst dived over to seal his treble.
Mike Richard crossed next from close in and Glenn Channing tucked away the conversion at the Brook End to complete the scoring.
This weekend Withy take a break from the league campaign when they face Teignmouth in the Devon Cup.
