WITHYCOMBE Rugby club got the perfect start to the season in a superb friendly game against Wessex RFC, writes Dave Somerton- Rees.

On a warm, sunny, Tuesday evening the game started well for Wessex who put the pressure on Withies and had the first kick at goal after five minutes, unfortunately failing to convert.

Withies upped their game with some good flowing rugby and were rewarded soon after with a well- worked try and a Richie Hall conversion, quickly followed by a second try which was duly converted.

With Hall dictating the majority of the play, Wessex never looked like getting into the game and Withies, again, had Wessex under the cosh with a third and fourth try.

With Wessex folding rapidly, Withies added yet more misery on Wessex by winning throws, scrums and driving mauls adding further tries and conversions before running out convincing winners 62 nil.

On this performance Withycombe look likely to have a very successful season ahead.
