Withycombe Under-16s went down 24-0 when they travelled to face Topsham in the opening game of a new season.
With contested line-outs for the first time, Withy made a decent start and, after winning their own line-out, made good ground before the advance was ended by a strong tackle.
A feature of the play was strong tackling by both sets of players, but it was Topsham who broke the deadlock when a tackle was missed in the Withy defence and a try resulted close to the posts.
Topsham were soon back on the front foot, but solid defence kept them at arm’s length before some excellent recycling by the Tops ended with a second try, this one converted, and the home side led 12-0 at half-time.
Early in the second half Withy conceded a five-metre scrum that the Tops won and their scrum half crossed for an unconverted try.
A fourth try followed as Topsham’s pacey backs again did all the damage. The fourth try was converted to complete the scoring.
Withy played their part in the game, but wayward passes were their downfall and, despite some encouraging spells of possession, were a little slower than the opposition at the breakdown. However, this was a good run out against good opposition and underlined for the coaching staff what needs working on on the training ground.
