Withycombe Under-9s made the short trip to cross-town neighbours Exmouth for their latest action.

In recent outings the Under-9s had been showing signs of improvement, but without getting much reward.

On a wet and heavy pitch the smaller Withy side would once again be made to work very hard. With both teams having reduced squads due to half term week it was down to the action.

From the very start the determination from both sets of players was clear to see. Corey Mills was again to the fore with his non stop tackling, and on this day he was forcibly backed up by both Lewis Tose and Tyler Gover who went on to share the Man of the Match honours.

With much of the early play being down the middle of the pitch it became more important than ever to use the space available.

Thomas Lawrence as ever offered this option as did Otto Montgomery-Ames as Withycombe started to open a lead. A well drilled and skilled Exmouth side must never be taken for granted and the work rate of all Exmouth players meant this was a firm, fair and superbly refereed game.

With legs now getting heavy the determined running of Kieran Long, Jamie Thompson and Max Rowley was starting to wear down the larger home team, this was leading to gaps that could be exploited by Jack McBryan and Jack Macdonald-Brown. All over the field the tackling was the fierce and hard, though fair. The running lines were much improved and passes were finding their targets and not going astray. At the end of an exhausting hours play, both sets of players looked shattered.

However, in the true spirit of the game the rivalries of the last hour were quickly forgotten and normal school and club friendships resumed, as it should be!

As for the final score, that finished 11-4 to Withycombe.

Mention must go to the players from both sides who required medical attention for injuries sustained. Happy to report that a few days post match both were raring to get back into action!
