Withycombe 10pts,Devonport Services 11Western Counties WestWITHYCOMBE were a whisker away from their first league win of the season.A late penalty from Matt Anstis saved the day for Services, who were seldom at their best,Withycombe followers will be wondering what might have been had influential player-coach Darren Legge not been carried off with an ankle injury early in the second half. With Legge missing, Withies lost some of their cutting edge in the forwards, especially at line-out time. The deadlock was broken after 20 minutes when Morgan Andrews shot over in the corner for Services.Ollie Drewett replied in similar fashion for Withies to leave it 5-5 at the break. There was no more scoring until the hour mark when Anstis put over a penalty.Withies response was to take the lead for the first time when Jimmy Holman cruised over.Anstis landed the winning kick for Services with three minutes on the watch.Withycombe 2nd XV cancelled their away game with Services in the Devon Merit Table following the death of former player Ollie Marsden.Ollie, who was 21, collapsed and later died while training with Totnes RFC last Wednesday night. He played for Withycombe last season while studying at Rolle College in Exmouth."Quite a few of the 2nd XV from last year are still with us and they all knew Ollie," said Withies secretary Dave Josey."Under the circumstances it did not seem appropriate to play so we called the game off."Ollie's funeral will take place at St Mary's Church in Totnes next Tuesday.
