EXMOUTH Cockles under- 8 squad played hosts to a strong Okehampton side but, although beaten in both games, gave a very good account of themselves, writes Mark Jones.

In the first match the visitors were quick off the mark with a fast, and direct approach that saw them score three tries.

The Cockles fought back and it was no more than they deserved when young James McGowan crossed over for a first half brace to add to his treble the week before.

Cameron Bennett and Ollie Jones also notched a brace of tries for the Cockles whilst Harry Sprague showed the visiting back line a clean pair of heels to charge through for a fine individual try.

However the hosts scored regular tries of their own to emerge as 14-7 winners.

The second match was a much closer contest with the Cockles being the more dominant force for much of the game.

There were some excellent forward runs from Owen Tidball that earned him a hat-trick of tries whilst a fired up Arron Lee bagged a brace, his second after running at least half the length of the pitch!

The visitors responded with some powerful play of their own but they found Eddie Ford a fierce competitor in the Cockles' rear-guard.

Ford also showed he can be just as effective further forward as he crossed for a second-half double of tries.

In the closing stages Callum Wilmott crossed twice and Max Handford also went over but it was Okehampton who ended as 12-11 winners.

The young Cockles can be mighty proud of their collective effort as they continue to show matchday upon matchday improvement.

Next up is a visit from Honiton.
