FORMER Exmouth rugby club youngster Andy Wright scored three tries in the last two games as England Students ended the international season with back-to-back wins over Scotland and Ireland.

England won convincingly 42-0 against their Scottish Universities opponents at Lasswade Rugby Club on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The game was played in atrocious weather conditions under floodlights.

The England Students with the wind and rain directly into their faces in the first half managed the conditions best and played a tight game, keeping hold of the ball.

Loughborough University player Wright, whose family home is in Clyst St George, opened the scoring after 10 minutes when talented Hartpury fly half Tristan Roberts made a break through the middle. The ball was passed along the line for Wright to beat his opposite number on the outside to score under the posts.

Wright scored his second try in the 29th minute, again going over in the corner but making sure to touch down under the posts because of the extremely windy conditions.

At half time the score was 0-12 and in the second half the England Students had the wind at their backs and were dominant for the remainder of the game.

"It was good to keep them to nil and everyone is pretty happy," said Wright.

"We tried to keep the tempo up and run everything."

Wright stayed in the team for the game against Ireland at Henley, which England won 30-14.

Wright aided England's win with a first-half score in the corner.

A tough match was anticipated with both teams racking up 40-plus point wins over Scottish Universities this season.

The first half suggested a close-run match as the Irish were competing ferociously at the breakdown and forced a couple of turnovers.

But, as the match wore on, the visitors fell foul of Scottish referee David Walker and two Irish yellow cards early in the final quarter gave England the green light to pull clear.

Andy's father is former Exmouth second-row forward Garry Wright, one of five Wright brothers who used to play together for the Cockles.
