Withycombe were 17-7 winners when they entertained Pirates Amateurs in a Tribute Cornwall and Devon match.

The visitors had the advantage of the slope in the first half and made it count as they scored a converted try to open the scoring.

Withy, once they got a foothold in the contest, began to move the ball well and it was no more than they deserved when a clever kick from Olly Toomey launched a powerful carry from Devon U20 back rower Alex Taylor and, as the pressure built, Toby Papp crossed for a try that Toomey converted.

It was another powerful carry from Taylor that led to the second Withy try, with Taylor ending another barn-storming run by crossing the whitewash and a second successful Toomey conversion sent Withy into the break with a 14-7 lead.

The second half was a relatively dour affair as both sets of players struggled to come to terms with a slippery ball. The only points in the second came from a Toomey penalty. The win, a ninth of the league campaign for Withy, sees them stay sixth in the table. They have four matches to play to complete their campaign, starting with Saturday’s home game against title-chasing Penryn.
