EAST Devon Eagles powered to an emphatic victory when they met Plymouth Titans, writes Jan McCarthy. Titans arrived in Exmouth several players short, so Eagles loaned them Nick Smith, Chris Strong and Dan MacLeod in order that the match could go ahead.
Straight from the kick off, Eagles Paul Flower opened the scoring when he crashed over under the posts with the trusty boot of Rich Cadywould providing the extras.
Titans responded and scored a try of their own, though they were unsuccessful with the conversion. The Eagles then took charge and became dominant in both attack and defence. Paul Morgan and Dale Sleeman each ran in a hat-trick of tries and Dean Bywood also crossed the Titans line, whilst Cadywould tucked away six conversions to send the Eagles into the break with a 46-4 advantage.
Right from the start of the second half, the Eagles continued their scoring ways with tries from Tony Emmins, Flower, Joe Perkins, who bagged a brace, and another treble from Sleeman, with Cadywould converting four and Perkins converting his own try before Titans ran in a late brace of tries in the closing stages. The late visiting flurry made no difference to the outcome of the contest as eagles ran out 84-14 winners. Man of the Match was awarded to Paul Flower, for the second time in three outings this season, as he, once again, showed great commitment to the cause with wonderful work rate and a constant desire to push forward.
The Eagles are now fielding strength in depth and have some promising new fledgling players in the Eagles Next side. l This Saturday sees the South Dorset Giants at the Imperial Ground, kick off 2.30pm, which promises to be an interesting game.
