Topsham ladies powered to a 66-17 win at Winscombe ladies in their opening league game of a new campaign, writes Katie Lunnon.

The Tops recruited well during the summer and went into the fixture with six new players, four of whom were playing their first ever competitive rugby match.

The first game of the season inevitably comes with the additional surge of adrenalin, especially when the opposition are a fresh side to the league and sporting some cracking new players.

The Tops made an excellent start, scoring two tries inside the first 10 minutes.

The early enterprise set the tone for what would be a tough afternoon for the home side, who hit back with a try of their own just before half-time.

However, Topsham dominated the first half, scoring six tries, five of them being converted.

In the second half they added four further tries and three conversions, while the home side scored two more tries.

Rebecca Partridge scored four of the Topsham tries while Kerry Ackerman, who was named Forward of the Match for her outstanding display of support play and countless individual darting runs, scored two tries.

The other Topsham tries came from captain Corinne Walsh, Meg Coombes, Ann Webb and Charlotte Harvey, the latter also winning the Back of the Match award for her performance that saw her display some excellent skills at scrum half and score what was a superb scorching try! Ann Webb also slotted no fewer than eight conversions.

This coming Sunday (September 16), Topsham entertain Withycombe with kick-off being 2.30pm. All support will be made very welcome.

If rugby is something you fancy giving a go, then the ladies are always recruiting and train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm at Topsham RFC.
