Withycombe banked a precious bonus point victory to stay firmly in the hunt for divisional honours as they won 29-10 at Exeter Saracens.
It was a match that saw the Parkin brothers dominate proceedings, scoring all five tries between them with John crossing the Saracens line four times and Joe once, and the latter also bagged the wrath of the match official, picking up the one Withy yellow card handed out in the contest!
Adding to the Parkin clan’s dominance of the day was a late cameo from Parkin senior, meaning three Parkins were on the pitch at the same time!
Just six minutes into the game Joe Parkin went over after quick hands opened the blindside at a scrum. The early score led to a period of phase play from Withy that gave cause for much admiration. However, the approach play was certainly not matched with similar slick finishing!
With 20 minutes on the board Saracens nabbed a breakaway try very much against the run of play, but missed the conversion from underneath the posts to leave the score level.
The Withy lead was swiftly restored with Joe Parkin’s break leading to the first of brother John’s four tries.
Just before the break Parkin sidestepped his way over from a blindside scrum move.
Six minutes into the second half Joe Parkin saw yellow, but this did not disrupt the impressive flow of the Withy game.
With 13 minutes remaining a solo break and try from John Parkin led to the securing of the all-important bonus point.
Back came the home side with their second try of a good contest, but Parkin raced clear for his fourth try to seal success.
Jack Pugsley converted two of the tries and Withy can now turn their attention to Saturday’s massive game when they entertain Bristol side Gordano in the RFU Senior Vase South West semi-final with kick-off at Raleigh Park being 2pm.
