Withycombe Under-12 action from their meeting with Exeter Youth

Withycombe Under-12s made their first visit to Oil Mill Lane to face the rebranded Exeter Youth.

As has been the case in their previous outing the Withy youngsters flew into the opposition from the start putting them on the back foot.

A short throw from a Withycombe line-out saw Will Cornish take the ball forward, shrugging off several tackle attempts, prior to scoring the first try.

A somewhat rattled Exeter had to contend with continued pressure as Withy rucked well, successfully switching play across the pitch. As the first half continued the game became a more balanced affair with Exeter coming back into it despite very determined Withy defence. During a period of well contested Withy possession, Exeter hit back with an interception try to level the score, sending the teams into the break at 5-all.

The second half began with more Exeter pressure which was rewarded with two further hard-fought tries. Withy clawed their way back up the pitch with along clearance kick from deep. The kick was promptly chased down to pressure Exeter, resulting in a penalty to Withy. A quick tap and go from new boy Finn Musgrove at scrum-half crossed for the second Withy try. The hosts closed out the game to win 20-10, but there was much to be pleased about for the Raleigh Park coaching staff.

The Withy boys have struggled against Exeter in the past, in part due to the home sides considerable size and weight. However, in this game there was a distinct change in approach from Withy who tackled liked demons throughout the game, making Exeter work hard for their points. An unlucky interception try and a further one from a lack of advantage following a knock would have made for a score draw. Probably the best tackling display of the season from the boys with everyone getting stuck in, certainly closing the gap on the opposition from previous seasons.

Impressive debutant Finn Musgrove was named the Man of the Match.
