Withycombe Under-9s came unstuck against a powerful Exeter Saracens side who beat them 4-1 and 8-1.
In the opening encounter the well drilled Exeter side showed excellent closing down skills and this gave the usual Withy runners precious little ball to work with.
Withy though refused to be intimated, despite the opposition being much larger and taller and gave as good as they got.
Saracens took a 4-0 lead into the break but Withy had pressed themselves in the first half, just falling short owing to some very competent tackling and counter rucking by the hosts.
The second half saw a much more balanced contest with Withy managing to exert very respectable levels of pressure.
The try which Withy’s all-round game deserved duly arrived when the impressive Will Jones scored. Ben Wilkinson was named Man of the Match for Withy.
The second game saw wholesale changes in both sides but the contest followed a similar pattern to the first encounter with the hosts bossing the first period and going into the break 6-0 up.
However, as happened in the first game, the second half produced a fine show from Withy with Saracens restricted to just two more scores whilst again Withy’s enterprise and industry was duly rewarded when new boy Matthew Rye scored.
Young Rye was named Man of the Match after what was a most encouraging first game for the side as he demonstrated great tackling, strength and energy in all areas of the pitch.
