Exmouth Nomads kept up their one hundred percent record in the merit table with a hard earned victory over Newton Abbot 3rds.
The Nomads started slowly and the Newton pack, using their weight advantage, were able to slot a pair of penalties to lead 6-0.
Lloyd Murrin then scored a penalty to reduce the deficit to three points before the first Nomads try.
Michael Smith won turnover ball and when it reached Kevin Rodwell, he scampered over. The conversion was missed but Nomads held an 8-6 lead.
Rich Guy was then sin-binned and, just before the break from a line-out, Newton were able to score an unconverted try to take a 13-8 lead into half-time.
Early second half pressure saw Leigh Ellis hacking on, the Newton fullback failed to gather and Ellis followed up to score in the corner. Murrin converted and Nomads held the lead once more at 15-13.
Nomads number 8, Russ Coombes then picked up from the scrum on the 10-metre line, went the blind-side and passed to veteran winger Rich Haynes who scored I the corner. Again Murrin converted and the lead was stretched to 22-13.
Then, after a Newton penalty had closed the score up to 22-16, from a solid scrum a great run from Sean Delooze, set up Haynes to cross for his second try and one more Murrin added the extra’s to make it 29-16.
Newton had the final say shortly after the sin binning of Rodwell. From the resultant penalty a scrum ended with their number 8 picking the ball up and driving over. The try was converted but it was Nomads celebrating at the end with a 29-23 success.
