Exmouth Under-16s emerged as 13-12 winners after a close encounter with Exeter Chiefs.

Just three minutes had been played when Jake Gilham’s run took him through the heart of the Chiefs defence before he rounded the full-back to score in the corner.

There followed a period of intense forward play, but it was the hosts who scored next with a converted try to take a 7-5 lead into the break.

With the wind in their favour in the second half a Flinn penalty took the Cockles into an 8-7 lead.

The Chiefs then pressed, but when turn-over ball was won from a ruck, Josh Juleff picked up to drive over the line.

The Chiefs stormed back and reduced the arrears to a single point with another try, but thereafter the Cockles defence stood firm to close out a richly deserved single point success in a well contested local derby league match.
