Exmouth 27, Cambridge 12
The Cockles showed the National Two (S) League just what might have been this season with a magnificent all-round show to upset the form book and send Cambridge packing.
After 126 days and 13 successive defeats, the Cockles faithful at last had something tangible to cheer! The previous league success had come back on November 23, again in front of the Imperial ground faithful when Clifton were beaten 36-34.
However, this victory was far more emphatic, and no fluke either!
Cambridge arrived in East Devon sitting a lofty sixth in the table and, with the home side preparing for life back in National Three (SW), no doubt some of the travelling support anticipated a good afternoon!
The Cockles took an early lead with a drive-over try from a five-metre line-out, finished off by prop George Savage and George Meadows tucked away the conversion. The visitors responded with a try, but that merely served to tweak a nerve amongst the Cockles who went up the other end and bagged a try by Todd Lowry that Meadows converted.
Mark Wathes, who recently became a father, played a part in the Lowry try and repeated the process as he played a big supporting role in the next try, scored by hooker Joe Brookes with Meadows again slotting the extras.
In the second half the visitors applied more pressure and this restricted the home scoring opportunities with Meadows slotting a brace of penalties.
Five minutes from time Cambridge got a late consolation try, but this was to be the Cockles day, a rare one in the sun in their National Two (S) experience, but one that had shades of ‘what might have been’ about it.
On Saturday the Cockles will be seeking further glory by chalking up back-to-back wins when they visit third from bottom Cornish All Blacks.
