Exmouth have added further quality to their squad as the pre-season build-up continues for the Cockles.
Former England Students prop Nick Halse has joined the Cockles.
Halse is a former Exeter College and UWIC front rower who is well known to a number of his new team mates.
He played and coached in Devon One with his local side New Cross last season after finishing his studies at Cardiff Metropolitan University, from where other new recruits Alex Goldman and Tom Emery were also studying.
Halse played 1st XV University rugby with UWIC and was part of the BUCS final squad that played at Twickenham.
Cockles head coach Jon Hill says: “Nick is another player who is well known to our set up and this was certainly a big factor in our enquiry about his availability. I offered Nick an opportunity to come down and trial for a week to see if he liked the set up and our aspirations and I am delighted that he has decided to join us. He has represented UWIC 1st XV and has been in a professional rugby environment there for three years. Since completing his studies he has played for New Cross, and also coached them, playing in a variety of roles. It was very pleasing that New Cross were delighted for Nick to make the big step up, and is a mark of the type of club they are. This was a big decision for Nick because he enjoys coaching and playing for his local team, and we fully appreciated that. This is another example of a player who has already played at a very good level, wanting to play at level four. Nick has really worked hard and has bought into what we are trying to achieve here. He also agreed to sign at the end of a gruelling beach session led by Dave Bargent. In fact, it was at the end of a two mile run back to the club that he agreed! Maybe he was just struggling for words!”
