RUGBY LEAGUE: Somerset Vikings 42pts East Devon Eagles 26 South West Conference
EAST Devon Eagles travelled to Taunton where they came up against a strong Somerset Vikings side playing 90 minutes of rugby in brilliant sunshine but on a surface that had been subjected to the heavy rains the day before.
Vikings' Chris Rowlands scored twice under the posts in the first six minutes and then, in the 15th minute, several Eagles missed tackles allowing Vikings' Pete Howe in under the posts. Mark Lees converted all three early tries.
On 20 minutes, Eagles' Jascha Saeck made a weaving run down the nearside, the ball was passed along the line for Olly Turton to touch down in the far corner, Richard Cadywould kicking the long range conversion.
On the half hour, Vikings' Mark Lees kicked a penalty and they further increased their lead with 2 tries, from Jason Holmwood and Joseph Bussell, Pete Howe kicking both conversions.
Just before half time, after a goal-line drop out, Eagles' Lawrence Giles caught the ball and snaked through the Vikings' defence to go over in the corner, but the conversion fell short, giving the Vikings a 32-10 lead at the break.
Vikings opened the second half scoring with a Paul Shepherd try, Lees converting and on 50 minutes Eagles' Tony Emmins was unlucky not to score when the referee deemed that the ball was not grounded, A further Vikings try in the far corner by Jason Holmwood, which was not converted, gave the Vikings a comfortable 42-10 lead.
The Eagles fought back tenaciously, scoring three tries. Olly Turton ran through the Vikings' defence to go over in the far corner but the conversion failed and then Sean Lovett, running in set play, split the Vikings defence to touch the ball down near the posts and Cadywould duly converted. The 3rd of the tries came when James Holman made a solo run at pace up the wing from the halfway line and, again, Cadwould converted.
That was to be the end of the scoring and, when referee Wayne Parker blew for time, the Eagles had to be content with losing 26 - 42 in this hard fought game.
Basic handling errors and missed tackles played a big part in this defeat and the team willneed to improve ready for the next outing which sees them take on Exeter Centurions.
