EAST Devon Eagles travelled to Barnstaple to play newcomers North Devon Raiders in a double header following the cancellation by Raiders of the scheduled game at the beginning of May, writes Jan McCarthy.

Prior to the start of the match, referee Ian Allison led both teams out onto the pitch for a minute's silence to mark the game's sympathy and condolences to the family of fellow Rugby League player Garry Purdham and the wider West Cumbrian community following last Wednesday's tragic events.

From the start of the game North Devon Raiders showed their intention and scored two quick tries, one of which was converted before the Eagles settled down.

On 12 minutes Eagles replied when Paul Flower was held up just short of the line and player coach Tony Emmins span the ball wide out for Graham Price to touch down by the corner flag for his first Eagles try, but the difficult conversion, from out wide, failed.

A swiftly taken penalty move saw Paul Morgan dive in by the posts, Brad Perkins converted, and the Eagles were back on level terms.

Dan Cuthbertson then powered over wide out for an unconverted try and Morgan wove through the Raiders' defence to cross over in the corner.

Perkins struck an excellent conversion and Eagles went into the break leading 20-10.

Eagles began brightly after the re-start and a weaving Sean Lovett run ended with him going over.

Perkins tucked away another conversion and then the successful kicker took a pass from Rich King to break through, shake off a number of challenges, and score a try of his own but the conversion fell short.

Raiders then bagged a brace of tries, one they converted, this owing to some sloppy Eagles defensive play.

In the closing stages Eagles increased the tempo and they ran in tries from Darren Bowden and Mark Wathes before Lovett applied the finishing touches to a sweeping move, crossing for his second try of the game.

Perkins then had the last word with yet another successful kick to complete the scoring and seal a 48-20 victory.

In only their second game of the season, all the Eagles squad performed well but took a little time to settle into the game.

There were though excellent performances from Graham Price, who defended superbly, Man of the Match Brad Perkins, Darren Bowden and an all-round solid game from Sean Lovett.
