Withycombe 2nd XV went down 31-7 in their first competitive game of the new season.

Withy made a bright start and created plenty of early pressure. Ten minutes into the contest a Topsham player sustained a broken ankle and, after a short delay, the action was switched to an adjoining pitch.

Withy were again the brighter of the sides and it was no surprise when they took the lead with captain Lee Tanton showing speed of thought with a tap penalty that saw Max Cooke mark his first senior outing with the first try.

Tanton slotted the conversion and Withy led 7-0.

Unfortunately, for the home side, that was as good as it got for the Tops hit back with a brace of tries to lead 12-7 at the interval.

After the beak Withy enjoyed plenty of possession, but without ever getting the better of the Topsham defence.

At the other end a clinical Tops continued to score. They shifted the ball wide to great effect and had to much pace for the Withy back line.

Withy skipper Tanton said: “Even in defeat I felt there were plenty of positives to draw from the game. Having a squad of 24 to select from was a real boost. We have plenty of new faces at the club and I feel we can go into this Saturday’s merit table meeting with Bideford in a confident mood.”
