EXMOUTH under-15s were comfortable winners when they met Topsham.
The Tops won the toss and played with the considerable wind in the first half. The Cockles made a bright start and got onto the front foot fro the first whistle.
The forwards gained early ground and, after Topsham had a line-out on their own five metre line, it was the Cockles forwards who too charge, driving Brad Cooke over the line. Flinn converted and the Cockles led 7-0.
The game was played like a true local derby and the match referee was busy with the whistle pulling up both sides infringements.
Play eventually settled down and, with the Tops now looking to get back into the contest it needed some solid defensive tackling from Dan Bradford-Jones and Matt Wells to keep them at bay.
The Cockles then increased their lead Jake Gilbody crossed with what proved to be the final action of the first half to see the Cockles into the break, leading 12-0.
In the second half, with the wind now in their favour, the Cockles took charge and pinned Topsham in their own half.
They so nearly scored a third try but were denied by some wonderful defensive play by the Tops’.
However, following that move, and from the resulting scrum Conway passed to Cooke who crossed for his second try of the game to complete the scoring and seal a 17-0 Cockles victory.
