Cockles make last four.
EXMOUTH under-11s failed to disappoint in the Land Rover Cup this weekend, with four outstanding games and earning a well deserved place in the semi-finals.
That was on reflection a fair result and losing to Kingsbridge, who went on to lose to eventual winners Topsham in the final, was a case of deja vue as it mirrored last years Devon festival!
With only group winners progressing in the competition, opponents Cullompton, Honiton and Okehampton made it a big ask.
The first game against Cullompton was a nervy affair and Exmouth camped in their own 22 for most of it, defended superbly. Tackling was of the highest order from both side’s and the game ended 0-0.
The second game against Okehampton was played, not up front, but out wide where the ball was moved about freely. The Cockles had to be patient, they were, and it paid dividends as the exacted near total dominance in the line-out and scrum, and, coupled with some excellent kicking, went on to win 2-0.
The final game in the group saw Exmouth needing to beat Honiton by two clear tries to make progress in the competition.
The youngsters produced another sterling effort in a what was a high pressure game, claimed a 2-0 win, topped the group and went through to the last four.
In the semi-final they came up against a very good Kingsbridge side and, in a game that was contested in a wonderful spirit, they battled bravely before being edged out 3-0.
