Exmouth RFC were winners in their pre-season meeting with Paignton but there’s room for improvement after a 19-0 half-time lead was subjected to a visiting comeback before the Cockles closed out a 26-19 win.
EXMOUTH RFC won their pre-season game with Paignton at the weekend with a confident performance.
Despite the 26-19 win, Cockles’ Chris Wright said: “It was a good work-out and, of course, it is very satisfying to win the game, but we were guilty of taking our foot off the pedal and not driving our dominance home to give a greater difference in scores at the final whistle. That said, there were some encouraging aspects of play and we must not lose sight of the fact that we have new coaches and, indeed, new players, bedding into the team and getting to know each other in real-time, match situations.”
The Cockles had raced into a 19-0 interval lead before allowing the visitors back into the contest in the second half.
The Cockles are back in action tomorrow evening (Friday) when Launceston arrive for a pre-season friendly.
With the visitors plying their trade at two levels higher than the Cockles, it should be a tremendous challenge for the hosts.
The game carries greater significance with Cockles Head Coach, John Hill having been the Launceston RFC Director of Rugby last season and both Dave Kimberely and John Fabian will line up in Cockles colours, taking on the side they played for last season.
The game kicks-off at 6.45pm and admission is free.
