Cockles impress against powerful Topsham side

The Cockles under-11s put up a very good show when they travelled to face the powerful Topsham side at their Bonfire Field home.
EXMOUTH under-11s made the short trip to Topsham to face the recent regional cup winners for a series of games that enabled all the players to see some action, writes Steve Oates.
Skippered by Max McConaghy, the young Cockles came under intense pressure from the off. Luke Hughes, Josh Wibberley, Tom Cooke, Zak Higginson and McConaghy did well up front with the scrum holding its own, and, when front row replacements were called upon, Madeline Buckley and Matt Seagar both played extremely well.
Joseph Oates and Higginson again showed their strength and played well together making valuable ground, punching holes in a formidable Topsham side.
Behind them both Hugo Flinn and Ollie Toomey at Scrum Half both did sterling jobs with Toomey bagging Exmouth’s two tries of the game.
Will Tidball kicked well and his backs of Joel Ranft, Joseph Stevens, Rich Hall and Morgan Wright all battled well but were unable to make any headway thru Tops’ superb defense.
Bone crunching tackles from both Ethan Langson Justice and Callum Cross stopped Tops’ in their tracks but quick recycling saw them run in a total of eight tries during the game. Harley Paver, receiving the ball out wide was just about to stretch her legs try bound as the ref halted play for an injury.
This was a fine effort by the Cockles leading to one of the Topsham coaches saying that it was not often he had seen an opposition run two tries past what is a very good side at Bonfire Fire. High praise indeed for a rapidly improving and developing young Exmouth side who are back in action this coming weekend at home to Crediton.
