EXMOUTH became the first team into the last four of the Devon Senior Cup when they won 27-15 at Torquay on Saturday afternoon.

With the two sides both not enjoying the best of times this term in their respective League campaigns, this competition was seen as a real chance for glory for either and it was the Cockles who seized the moment in a game of excellent tempo, despite the terrible weather conditions.

The first half of the game saw the hosts have the benefit of the elements and the only score of the first 40 minutes saw the home side nab a converted try.

With the wind very much in their favour after the break and it did not take the Cockles long to restore parity.

The ball was worked across the park for centre Paul Morgan to charge over and a successful Sean Fayter conversion made it 7-7.

Young Fayter then tucked a way a penalty from some 40 metres to take the Cockles into the lead for the first time in the contest, but back came Torquay with an unconverted try and now they led.

Next on the score sheet was centre Mark Wathes as he crossed over in the corner and once more the lead changed hands.

It was soon 15 all as the hosts put away a penalty, but, before long, the Cockles were deservedly in front as the lively Wathes crossed for his second try of the game.

Fly-half Fayter calmly put away the conversion and suddenly there was daylight between the two teams.

Now Torquay needed to find another gear and they did, but they also found the Cockles defence shutting them out very confidently and the game was effectively over before, in the final seconds, Matt Ryan crossed for his first, and the Cockles fourth, try of the game to seal a richly deserved 27-15 victory and a semi final place.

l On Saturday the Cockles return to National Three (South West) action when they host fourth placed Chinnor with kick off at 2pm.
