Exmouth 20, Newton Abbot 19
Two tries from Tom Kill and some fine goal kicking from the boot of Richard Cadywould saw Exmouth home in a thrilling cup tie against Newton Abbot.
The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges with two Steven Ward penalties before a try from Kill converted by Cadywould.
Ward and Cadywould traded a penalty a piece before Newton’s Dean Avery dotted down from a metre out converted by ward to give the visitors a 16-10 half-time advantage.
Kill struck in the second half as the Cockles handling proved too sharp for the visitors. Cadywould struck a fine touch line conversion.
Ward nudged the visitors ahead before Cadywould responded with a penalty of his own.
At 20-19 to the Cockles there was a nervy six minutes of injury time that had the home support on tender hooks before the final whistle was greeted with massed applause.
The Cockles who displayed great strength in depth, naming only eight starters from the previous league match!
The Cockles Chris Wright said: “The starting line-up worked well and then the bench was used to great effect. Under the match day leadership of Stuart Lowe the team gained a richly deserved third successive title at being Devon champions – a crown they’d love to be keeping with us.”
That final will be against Barnstaple at the Imperial Ground on Sunday, May 5.
