Polly Newcombe and Christine Jack land ladies’ pairs success at Exmouth Bridge Club

It has been an eventful past week for Exmouth bridge club.

On Saturday the Charity Duplicate Pairs event took place with 58 players in attendance.

As well as the bridge there was a splendid tea served up.

In all a magnificent sum of £575 was raised and that will now go towards the purchase of

parasols for the benefit of the residents of Bystock Court.

Shelagh and John Dick were the winners N/S with 68.33 per cent with Bill and Diane Oeters, playing E/S achieving the outstanding score of 71.21 per cent.

The second, and final, leg of the Club Pairs Championship was held in midweek with eleven players present.

Shelagh and Brian Hughes were top on the day with 61.46 per cent. Overall, however, after the two sessions the winners were Hugh Stedham and Alan Swift with an aggregate score of 58.13 per cent.

The runners-up were Shelagh and Brian Hughes with 54.48 per cent.

The Ladies Pairs’ and Men’s Pairs competition was held and, in the ladies section the winners were Polly Newcombe and Christine Jack with 63.80 per cent ahead of Margaret Dean-Spencer and Jean Vinnicombe who scored 61.98 per cent.

On the men’s side there was a poor showing of only six pairs. Keith Ponsford and Chris Hall came out on top with 60 per cent ahead of Brian Hughes and Alf Wallen wIth 58 per cent.
