WESTPOINT proved to be a superb venue for a series of evening races for Exeter Wheelers cycling club.

The short circuit they provide at the home of the Devon County Show has always been a good venue with its tight corners, short straights, and a short climb coupled with straights ready made for fast and furious racing.

The Exmouth interest came in the senior event as two of the Exmouth club (Cylclesport Dynamo) riders, in the shape of Ian Phillips and Andy Waite, competed. Waite confessed pre race that this was his first such outing for some time whilst Phillips owned up to enjoying the sprinting.

There was a good turn out to watch the racing. The Senior race saw them contest five laps of the circuit ikn fully 40 minutes of racing. The Exmouth pair got off to a cracking start and set the initial pace.

When the bell that signals the start of the final lap went it saw Phillips take the lead and he powered his way on to complete a fast last lap and take the race. waite came in just behind the main group who were left to follow in the wake of winner Phillips.

It has been a difficult start to the cycling season for Phillips and this win is probably just what was required to give him the boost he needed. He's ridden with precious little fortune to date this ter,m but events at Westpoint suggest he's back amongst the best! The clubs weekly 10 mile time trial saw Andy Brimecombe the quickest Cyclesport Dynamo rider, clocking 24mins 49secs. Other Exmouth club riders' times were: Pam Symons 30:15, Emily Adkin 26:36, Jamie Fabrizio 25:23, Keith White 26:08, and Paul Martin 25:55.
